A woman or black man... history is made! Is America Ready?
Published on January 31, 2008 By relswick In US Domestic
As a recovering Democrat... I am interested to see the fall out of this one.

John Edwards has dropped out of the race of the Democratic Nomination, so it is almost a given that there will be a woman or a black man as the Democratic Presidential Candidate.

So, what does that mean?

Well, we will find out one way or another if America is ready to move on into the future past it's history. I do not believe it will happen. Should Clinton win, then I believe she has a better chance of defeating the Republican nominee. Why, well, women are not as much of a minority than African Americans are. Perhaps even 50%. I do however believe even she will lose. I personally believe there are too many bigots out there against women to allow her to win, even if they love Bill. I predict, should she win, then the end results will be Democrats = 38% to the Replicans 72% of the vote.

As to Obama, same deal, there is still too much racism in our country and I believe he will lose as well. There is also an x-factor, which is really disturbing and I do not know how much of an effect it will have, should Obama win the nomination of the Dems. It is that of his name and past history specifically related to Islam. As I have recieved just a bit of email 'spam' from friends and family, which show Obama in a bad light, like not putting his hand over his heart durin the Pledge of Allegience or the mention of his connections to Islam (through his father and eduction as a kid, to his signing on as a Senator with his hand on the Qu'ran). I do not know how much of this 'spam' is true. It really doesn't matter though. MOST people will not research on wheather it is true or not. Most people will believe it, so perception is almost reality. This country is no way near ready for someone that follows even the most moderate tenents of the Qu'ran or has studied it in some degree, to be elected as President, even it is somewhat of a falsehood. If it is true, then Obama is doomed to fail and fail hard. 9/11 is just too recent of a memory to allow this, even for remotely moderate Christians. So if Obama wins the nomiation the results will be Dems = 32%, Reps = 68 %

This is my just my opionion and has very little basis in fact. It is based upon my relationships and what I see in the world, but look around and ask yourself about some of the points I raised above. I liked John Edwards and would actually have seriously considered voting for him over an independent.

So the Republicans win again.

hmmm...does 38 and 72 = 100?
on Jan 31, 2008

Yeah, there are still people who can't seem to get passed race and sex, aren't there.  I'm wondering if this article is an example of the kettle or the pot.

Relswick,

Have you even for a second considered the idea that perhaps other people are not bigots and might just vote against a black man or even a woman because of issues other than skin colour or gender?

On the other hand, your entire article is based on the candidate's skin colour and gender, resulting in the conclusion that the woman will probably win because women are a larger minority than blacks. (In reality, women are a majority because they live longer).

As for the black minority, I don't know the numbers. Are there fewer of them than of other minorities? Are they targeted by racists more often than other minorities? Do racists among them target other minorities less often than racists among other minorities or the majority target blacks? All these questions are important if yours are.

As to Obama, there is also too much intelligence in your country and people might just vote against him because he is an idiot. John Edwards is, in my view, an ambulance chaser and a lawyer who goes after doctors who really have enough problems (turns out medicine is not easy). He is also a typical example of an evil corporate lawyer. It is because of people like him that doctors will rather not try to help difficult patients because they have to fear punishment for trying.

The fact that he is also a Democrat is, for me, no reason to vote for him. It's rather a reason not to vote for other, more useful, Democrats.

This country is no way near ready for someone that follows even the most moderate tenents of the Qu'ran

Not while so many followers of the Quran try to destroy America, yes.

I see you also haven't researched the spam. (It's not true.)

Well, I hope the Republicans win again.

And I can give you three reasons:

1. Apart from the crazy uncle the Republican candidates do not favour a quick withdrawal from Iraq. And none of them believe that Iraqis will simply stop killing each other just because there are no American troops around. The country has been at war with its neighbours and its local minorities (and the Shiite majority) for many decades. Obama cannot "end" that war, and if he thinks he can, he is an idiot.

2. None of the Republican candidates have many vocal supporters that make their race or gender an issue. I do not support the idea that race or gender are an issue when it comes to politics and leadership. Democrats do and hence I wouldn't vote for one.

3. Most of the Republican candidates have more experience than Obama and a better track record than Hillary (who managed to marry well but has not actually DONE anything).

But if the majority/minority issue is important to you, you should support Lieberman, who is, unfortunately, not running this time. He is a Jew (a smaller ethnic minority than blacks), a man (the minority gender), and a Democrat (the party who supports minorities, I hear).

If that is important to you.

For me experience, profession, political positions, and religion counts. I prefer experienced politicians over inexperienced politicians, non-lawyers over lawyers, conservatives and moderate socialists over raving liberals, fascists, and communists, and Christians, Jews, orthodox Muslims*, non-militant atheists, Zoroastrians, and followers of Indian religions over today's standard Muslims and militant atheists.

*My definition of an "orthodox Muslim" is a Muslim who holds belief in Allah and the Quran over his own or his ethnic group's interests. An Arab nationalist is not an orthodox Muslim, neither are Wahabis and Khomeinists.

Some great point made my all to this point, hope it keeps up.

I was talking to by brother last night about this very issue, and he, being a conservative along with being a hard line christain cannot in any way see voting for Obama; primarily because of the muslim issue. Also he brought fore the issue of Obama being a Black. His is of mind that if elected Obama wouldn't last a year before someone attempted to kill him. I am not sure of the latter, however, I am of a mind that the muslim side will be a major problem if he is selected as the Democratic Hopefull.

As to Clinton my brother on I were of the same mind, she has the best chance of the Democratic hopefulls to win the position of President.

And, at this point I have not made my mind up who I favor.

And one more thing; you can pretty much bet that Edwards will be throwing in this hat for the V.P. position.

Um, Obama's a Christian, and has been since he was a kid. He's not Muslim. Tell your brother nice try, though.

Actually, you can tell your brother he's a bigoted bastard who's bought into the lies that the "Christian" (and I use this term very, very loosely) Right have tried to sell.

Here's an idea for you both: before you believe the tripe you get in your e-mail inbox, make snopes your friend.

Is Obama a Muslim? Nope.

Or watch this video of Obama refuting all the stupid claims ignorant people like to make about him:

Just for the history buffs, in 1872 Victoria Woodhull ran for President of the United States on the Freedom Party ticket. Her running mate (even though he was nominated without his knowledge or consent) was Frederick Douglas, a former slave.
So, this isn't the first time that a woman and an African American have been on the Presidential ticket.
They lost, by the way.

SanChonino,

You don't know my brother, hence you have no right assuming that he is a bigot. You are the only one that is showiing his stupdity. To call someone a bustard before even getting to know that person shows to the rest of the world that you are of little mind.

The only thing he indicated was that he was worry about the muslim issue not that he wouldn't vote for him. In fact at this time that is who he is supporting. He works on this campaign staff in his home town.

So dirt bag don't jump until you have all the information. All we were doing was discussing what the problems would be for Obama.

A. Not all Muslims are radical jihadists.

The five pillars of Islam are as follows:
1. You must believe in Allah, and that Muhammed is the prophet of Allah.
2. You must pray 5 times a day while facing Mecca.
3. You must give alms to the poor. (Give to Charity)
4. You must fast during Ramadan.
5. All Muslims should make a pilgrimage to Mecca at least once during their life.

So, there is nothing in those beliefs that say you must kill the "infidels" to be a good Muslim. Most Muslims are actually kind, thoughtful people who wouldn't hurt a fly. Your brother, and by proxy, you, were stereotyping people together based on the actions of a few.

B. SC's assumption was based on a very poorly worded comment by yourself that could only lead one to believe that's how your brother thought.

That sounds pretty prejudiced to me.

The biggest problem is ignorance. Your brother (and he through you here) was perpetuating ignorance. I was just trying to clear things up.

You made your brother sound pretty bigoted in your first post . . . sorry to jump on him like that, but it was your own wording that made him sound that way.

Don't know. He's been there, done that. AG, however...

Yeah, I don't think he's hoping for veep.

And frankly, whichever of the two that's left get the nod, they need to pick Bill Richardson as their running mate - a man with more foreign relations experience than the rest of the field combined, and well-respected abroad - just what we need in a VP right now.

I know that some Muslims are kind, thoughtful people. But have you actually tried it out?

Dress up as an obvious Jew, wear a t-shirt with a Star of David on it and walk through an Arab (Muslim) city. See how kind and thoughtful they are.

(You can try the same trick as an obvious Muslim in any western or Israeli city to test the kindness of Jews, Christians, and atheists.)

What experiences do you base your statement on?

I have to agree with Leauki on this one. We, Americans, have been called warmongers, arrogant and infidels, this from many of those some would consider kind, thoughtful people. We are thoughtful, kind, caring and humble, yet we are disliked by many countries because of the actions of a few in the Gov't.

Why should I be the target for what Bush, Clinton or Reagan did in the past?

None the less I have to agree that this article came across as exactly that which the writer criticized. I would suggest that next time you write an article you might wanna research things a bit more before throwing it out there knowing this kind of response was obvious to come.

I've known a few, and research in some "Social Studies" classes, so not a whole lot of experience, I'll admit. I was mostly just trying to use the 5 pillars as a way to get people to think less of the radical Muslims and more on what the religion itself is, which is not, from what little I've learned, a bad thing. I don't want people to be stereotyped, is all.
