Usually that is the only side of Islam they get to seem, the author does raise some interesting issues however, ones that i feel affect then majority of modern religions.

I think the fact that these religions were conceived in a time very different to ours, that paradigms have caused us to think, as some would say at least, in a more civilized manner than back then, causes grave issues.

Religion for the most part is no longer responsible for dictating was it right and wrong, case and point being how most people here in the UK are scratching their heads while the Anglican church publicly embarrasses itself over the issue of women bishops.

This also leads me to show that religion has a hard time changing or acknowledging change, this is usually brought about by the very notion that you are altering the word of god himself if you go about changing things that appear in Holy Scripture. Take a look at the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, any negotiation over the issue falls flat on it's face when Imams say that no Muslim on the planet has the right to debate the issue with Jews as such it is not open to discussion. A fairly convenient approach for them isn't it?

Seeing such educated men quibble in such a means drives me close to insanity, but i suspect that i must just grit my teeth and deal with it, conservatives biggest enemy is the mortality of man. In a few generations time I suspect (hope at least) that we'll look back on such struggles and wonder at our stupidity.

Many people are confusing Islam with secular terrorists (like the PLO), secular nationalists (like Nasser and Saddam Hussein), and fanatical heretical sects (like the Wahabis or the followers of Khomeini).

I think it is easily understood that an openly secular group with Muslim and Christian members (like the PLO) does not represent Islam. Arab dictatorships that dethroned their Muslim kings also do not represent Islam; I hope that is equally clear.

Wahabiism (Saudi Arabia's and the Taliban's ideology) was, before the discovery of oil that allowed them to take over mosques worldwide, roundly condemned as heresy by Muslim scholars all over the world.

And Khomeini's ideology was certainly not the traditional Islamic view of how a country should be run. (For example, Iran/Persia was never run that way before, even under the most Islamic rulers.) Shia Islam traditionally (i.e. before Khomeini) regards Muhamme'd descendants as the legal leaders of all Muslims. But that would be the ruling family of Jordan and Morocco rather than people like Abjadinad (or whatever his exact name is).

Islam is not only not specifically intolerant but is one of the few religions that has rules that command tolerance to be practiced.

Not only does the Quran specifically mention Judaism and Christianity as acceptable true religions, but the first Islamic state, Muhammed's rule over Medina, had a constitution that enshrined the equality between Jews and Muslims in that Islamic state.

The fact that groups like Hamas tend to live a different "Islam" doesn't Islamic teachings intolerant. I think that should be kept in mind.

I'd also recommend reading up on Adam Smith and Baron de Montague, truly amazing thinkers whom really moved our society forward.

Many Greek philosphers were truly ahead of the time, and i'm greatful to the Arab world for keeping much of their teachings their scriptures intact while we went about destroying them during the dark ages.

I have to agree with Leauki on this one. We, Americans, have been called warmongers, arrogant and infidels, this from many of those some would consider kind, thoughtful people. We are thoughtful, kind, caring and humble, yet we are disliked by many countries because of the actions of a few in the Gov't.
Why should I be the target for what Bush, Clinton or Reagan did in the past?
None the less I have to agree that this article came across as exactly that which the writer criticized. I was talking to by brother last night about this very issue, and he, being a conservative along with being a hard line christain cannot in any way see voting for Obama; primarily because of the muslim issue. Also he brought fore the issue of Obama being a Black. His is of mind that if elected Obama wouldn't last a year before someone attempted to kill him. I am not sure of the latter, however, I am of a mind that the muslim side will be a major problem if he is selected as the Democratic Hopefull.
As to Clinton my brother on I were of the same mind, she has the best chance of the Democratic hopefulls to win the position of President.

Have you even for a second considered the idea that perhaps other people are not bigots and might just vote against a black man or even a woman because of issues other than skin colour or gender?

On the other hand, your entire article is based on the candidate's skin colour and gender, resulting in the conclusion that the woman will probably win because women are a larger minority than blacks. (In reality, women are a majority because they live longer).

As for the black minority, I don't know the numbers. Are there fewer of them than of other minorities? Are they targeted by racists more often than other minorities? Do racists among them target other minorities less often than racists among other minorities or the majority target blacks? All these questions are important if yours are.

As to Obama, there is also too much intelligence in your country and people might just vote against him because he is an idiot. John Edwards is, in my view, an ambulance chaser and a lawyer who goes after doctors who really have enough problems (turns out medicine is not easy). He is also a typical example of an evil corporate lawyer. It is because of people like him that doctors will rather not try to help difficult patients because they have to fear punishment for trying.

The fact that he is also a Democrat is, for me, no reason to vote for him. It's rather a reason not to vote for other, more useful, Democrats.

This country is no way near ready for someone that follows even the most moderate tenents of the Qu'ran

Not while so many followers of the Quran try to destroy America, yes.

I see you also haven't researched the spam. (It's not true.)

Well, I hope the Republicans win again.

And I can give you three reasons:

1. Apart from the crazy uncle the Republican candidates do not favour a quick withdrawal from Iraq. And none of them believe that Iraqis will simply stop killing each other just because there are no American troops around. The country has been at war with its neighbours and its local minorities (and the Shiite majority) for many decades. Obama cannot "end" that war, and if he thinks he can, he is an idiot.

2. None of the Republican candidates have many vocal supporters that make their race or gender an issue. I do not support the idea that race or gender are an issue when it comes to politics and leadership. Democrats do and hence I wouldn't vote for one.

3. Most of the Republican candidates have more experience than Obama and a better track record than Hillary (who managed to marry well but has not actually DONE anything).

But if the majority/minority issue is important to you, you should support Lieberman, who is, unfortunately, not running this time. He is a Jew (a smaller ethnic minority than blacks), a man (the minority gender), and a Democrat (the party who supports minorities, I hear).

If that is important to you.

For me experience, profession, political positions, and religion counts. I prefer experienced politicians over inexperienced politicians, non-lawyers over lawyers, conservatives and moderate socialists over raving liberals, fascists, and communists, and Christians, Jews, orthodox Muslims*, non-militant atheists, Zoroastrians, and followers of Indian religions over today's standard Muslims and militant atheists.

*My definition of an "orthodox Muslim" is a Muslim who holds belief in Allah and the Quran over his own or his ethnic group's interests. An Arab nationalist is not an orthodox Muslim, neither are Wahabis and Khomeinists.

I knew Wendy for about 4 years. In that time, she managed to really make an impact on my life and with her being gone, there'll always be a gaping hole in my heart where she once occupied. She was one of the best friends I ever had and I never had the guts to tell her. Now I never can. She was the most down to earth and real woman I had ever known. Her being here was a blessing to all whose life she touched. Mine is marked forever from a person that had done so much, both without being asked and asking nothing in return.

The hardest thing I've ever done is trying to let go of the pain of the loss. I've seen some of the news reports and honestly, the only thing black and white is the fact that I'll never again hear her sing, see her habit of bobbling her head when she made a joke or looking at those electric blue eyes, followed by that gentle, soft voice that always seemed to smooth the bumps in the road out so easily. The world truly lost something beautiful. I offer my condolences to the family and and my deepest, most profound apologies to Wendy, whom I should have been man enough to admit what she was to me.

When I think about three words to describe her, the only three are Mother, Best Friend and Hero. I don't know if anyone will see this or even care, but I pray that letting it out a little bit may ease the pain that is so hard to push past. God be with you and care for you, Wendy. We voiced our opinions as he asked and as he did.

Truthfully for the most part the post was fine, espcially countering the BS that Media is reporting. I am very sorry for the way you are feeling I am apologize that I am partially to blame for that. Just remember that we do all come from the same family and there have been MANY issues that have happend over the years and for the most part most of us can FORGIVE AND FORGET....The ones who continue to hold a grudge and can't get over it...let them be miserable....If you don't have family who do you have?????

You did say in the orignal post that this blog was intended to stir the pot (not the exact words) I guess that is what happened.

As for any of us being close.....Instead of getting together only for the bad things that happen.....We have a family reunion every year in July and as far as I know it is held the same weekend that it has been held for many years. I have also heard that there is another reunion in Kentucky this I believe is at the end of Septemeber.

<pubDateParsed>2008-07-19T21:57:51</pubDateParsed>
taylortukian on RIP Wendy 'Bug' Meinke

As a member of Bug's family, I felt their was nothing wrong with the original post and I'm disappointed at the reaction you did recieve. I'm sorry that you were treated the way you were. You posted an honest and heartfelt reaction to this tragedy. None of us were close to Bug, including the people who felt the need to "shout" at you. Where were they when she was alive?
I myself, appreciate the original post and your honest feelings, because no one can expect anything else in this world. This is the US, not Russia or Communist China. A blog is a place for people to write their feelings, and if you do not agree with how someone feels, write in your own blog instead of ripping them apart. I think that the best thing we can all do here, is maybe keep it up to date on what is happening with the case. As stated before....maybe JUST maybe someone will know something and have the decency to come forward about it. By either contacting the Taylor Police Post or if I am not mistaken the news that I have heard is that the Michigan State Police are now invloved as well.

<pubDateParsed>2008-07-19T21:57:51</pubDateParsed>
taylortukian on RIP Wendy 'Bug' Meinke

You have done an honorable thing here.
